Saharon Shelah

Israeli mathematician

b. 1945age 81Living

Saharon Shelah has published more than 1,100 peer-reviewed papers, an output remarkable in any field and extraordinary in mathematical logic. His PCF theory found unexpected structure inside cardinal arithmetic even where problems like the continuum hypothesis are formally undecidable, and his classification theory reshaped model theory while solving Morley's problem along the way. He has won the Israel Prize, the Wolf Prize, and the Steele Prize for work that keeps turning up in algebra and algebraic geometry, far outside logic's usual borders.
