Sam Wanamaker

American actor

1919 – 1993aged 74

An American actor and director who moved to Britain in the 1950s after becoming fearful of the Hollywood blacklist for his communist sympathies, and spent the following decades building a major career in British theater while continuing film and television work. He is remembered above all for leading the decades-long campaign to rebuild Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, a project completed only after his death and honored in the name of its second stage, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
