Russian and Soviet poet, playwright, translator
1887 – 1964aged 76
A Belarusian-Jewish poet whom Maxim Gorky called the founder of Soviet children's literature, writing verse that generations of Russian children grew up reciting. He was equally serious as a translator, rendering Shakespeare's sonnets and a wide range of English poetry into Russian with a fidelity that made his versions standards in their own right.
