1915 – 2005aged 89

Wrote the American Jewish novel into the centre of American literature — Augie March, Herzog, Humboldt's Gift — in prose that could switch from street argot to metaphysics inside a sentence. Nobel Prize in Literature, 1976, and three National Book Awards, which nobody else has managed.
