Wrote the lyrics for Fiddler on the Roof (1964), turning Sholem Aleichem's Tevye stories into one of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history and giving it songs — "Sunrise, Sunset," "If I Were a Rich Man" — that became standards well outside the theater.
