Sheldon Leonard

American actor, producer, director, and writer

1907 – 1997aged 89

Born Sheldon Leonard Bershad, he built a first career as a character actor typecast as a gangster, with his thick New York accent appearing in It's a Wonderful Life, To Have and Have Not, and Guys and Dolls. He then moved to television production, creating or producing The Danny Thomas Show, The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C., and I Spy — one of American network television's first series with a Black lead actor in an equal role. His recasting of the Dick Van Dyke Show pilot with Van Dyke in place of Carl Reiner shaped one of the era's defining sitcoms; the writers of The Big Bang Theory later named two lead characters, Sheldon and Leonard, after him.
