After a decade writing radio comedy, Schwartz created two of American television's most rerun sitcoms, Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch, shows dismissed by critics on arrival that outlasted most of what critics preferred instead. Both have run in syndication continuously since the 1970s, seeding spin-off films, reunion specials and a permanent place in the culture's shorthand for castaways and blended families alike. He was honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star and inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2008, in his nineties and still working.
