Shulamit Aloni founded Israel's progressive Ratz party and later led Meretz, using her decades in the Knesset to push through the law decriminalizing homosexuality and to campaign for secularism, equal treatment of Arab citizens, and a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She served as Minister of Education and as Leader of the Opposition, and won the Israel Prize in 2000 for her contribution to Israeli society.
