Siegfried Kracauer

German writer, journalist, sociologist, cultural critic

1889 – 1966aged 77

A German film theorist and cultural critic, loosely associated with the Frankfurt School, who argued that cinema's essential achievement was realism — its capacity to redeem physical reality by simply recording it, rather than imitating theater or painting. That argument, laid out across decades of criticism and later in his book Theory of Film, shaped how later scholars thought about what film is actually for.
