A Pre-Raphaelite painter known for depicting both Jewish life and same-sex desire with unusual openness for Victorian Britain, work that gave him real standing among his contemporaries before his career was cut short. Arrests and convictions for attempted sodomy in 1873 and 1874 led to public scandal and effectively ended his mainstream career, though his paintings have since been reassessed as significant.
