1901 – 1985aged 84
Simon Kuznets, born in the Russian Empire, won the 1971 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for turning economics into an empirical discipline grounded in data rather than theory alone. He pioneered the concept of gross domestic product, the single-number measure of a country's economic output that governments still use to judge growth, recession, and everything in between.
