Simone Weil
French philosopher, writer, and social activist
1909 – 1943aged 34
A French philosopher who moved between the seminar room and the factory floor — she taught intermittently through the 1930s while working stints as a laborer, mostly in car plants, to understand working-class life directly, and she took the side of the anarchist Durruti Column in the Spanish Civil War. Increasingly drawn to Christian mysticism, she died in England in 1943 of heart failure, having restricted her own food intake in solidarity with occupied France. Most of her writing was published only after her death.
