Stan Getz
American jazz saxophonist
1927 – 1991aged 64
A tenor saxophonist nicknamed "The Sound" for a tone modeled on his idol Lester Young's — warm, lyrical, and instantly identifiable even to listeners outside jazz. He rose to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band before moving through bebop and cool jazz, and in the early 1960s, drawing on the songwriting of Antônio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto, helped introduce bossa nova to American audiences with the 1964 hit "The Girl from Ipanema," one of the most enduring recordings of that crossover.
