Stanley Donen started as a Broadway chorus dancer before becoming, alongside Gene Kelly, one of the two directors most responsible for the golden-age Hollywood musical, co-directing On the Town and Singin' in the Rain. He kept working long after the genre faded, directing the Cary Grant thriller Charade and the comedy Bedazzled, and received an Honorary Academy Award in 1998 for a body of work spanning musicals, romance and satire.
