Stefan Zweig

Austrian writer

1881 – 1942aged 60

One of the most widely translated writers in the world at the height of his fame in the 1920s and 30s, he wrote psychologically acute fiction — Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok, Beware of Pity — alongside biographies of figures from Marie Antoinette to Balzac. Driven from Austria by the Nazis' rise in 1934, he emigrated first to England and then to Brazil, where despair over Europe's fate led him and his wife to take their own lives in Petropolis in February 1942.
