Steve Khan changed his surname from Cahn early in his career to build an identity separate from his father, the lyricist Sammy Cahn, then did so as a session guitarist behind Steely Dan, Billy Joel, and Miles Davis. He led the jazz-fusion quartet Eyewitness through the 1980s and 90s and earned Grammy nominations for Local Color (1987) and Borrowed Time (2007); Jazz Life named him one of the twenty-two greatest jazz guitarists in 1998.
