Built a decades-long career as a Hollywood leading man after 20th Century Fox signed him to its late-1950s talent-building program, appearing in The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Longest Day, and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for The Mark (1961), the peak of a run of lead roles that followed years of small parts after his discharge from the Army Corps of Engineers.
