Sylvia Miles earned two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress, for Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Farewell, My Lovely (1975). A lifelong New Yorker, she worked extensively Off-Broadway, including in a one-woman musical about her own life, It's Me, Sylvia!, and became enough of a fixture in the city's cultural and social life that a documentary, I Was Always Sylvia, was made about her for public television.
