Theodor Herzl

1860 – 1904aged 44

A Viennese journalist who covered the Dreyfus affair, concluded that assimilation would never protect European Jews, and set out to found a state. Died at 44 having convened the First Zionist Congress; Israel was declared forty-four years later.
