Vanessa Carlton's 2002 debut single "A Thousand Miles" spent 41 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned three Grammy nominations, launching a career she then steered away from major labels after a difficult second album; she released her later records, including Rabbits on the Run and Liberman, independently to strong critical notice. In 2019 she made her Broadway debut in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and Billboard later ranked her among the century's best female artists.
