A German philologist who kept a secret diary throughout the Nazi era after being stripped of his university post under the regime's racial laws — one of the most detailed firsthand records of daily life for a Jew in Germany between 1933 and 1945. Published in 1995 as I Shall Bear Witness and To the Bitter End, it stands alongside his LTI – Lingua Tertii Imperii, a study of how Nazi propaganda corrupted the German language, as an essential primary source on the period.
