Victor Niederhoffer
American statistician, businessman and squash player
1943 – 2026aged 82
Victor Niederhoffer won the U.S. squash championship eight times, once returning from a five-year hiatus he took to protest antisemitism in the sport, while building a hedge fund that returned 35 percent a year through the 1980s and 90s and was twice ranked the best-performing fund of its kind. Both incarnations of his firm eventually collapsed — first in the October 1997 mini-crash, when he sued the Chicago Mercantile Exchange over alleged price collusion and won a settlement he passed on to clients in full, and again in the 2007 subprime crisis. He also won four national paddleball titles and was inducted into the U.S. Squash Hall of Fame.
