Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild

British businessman and politician

1910 – 1990aged 79

Victor Rothschild trained as a zoologist at Cambridge before serving as a British intelligence officer through the Second World War, personally defusing enemy bombs and sabotage devices as the army's chief explosives expert — work that earned him the George Medal. He later ran research at Royal Dutch Shell and advised both the Heath and Thatcher governments on science policy. His Cambridge friendships with Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt, members of the Cambridge Spy Ring, fed persistent but never proven suspicion that he was a fifth Soviet agent among them.
