Wanda Landowska

Polish-French harpsichordist

1879 – 1959aged 80

A Polish harpsichordist who single-handedly revived an instrument the world had all but forgotten: in 1933 she made the first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations on harpsichord, at a time when the piano had displaced it almost entirely from concert life. Her playing, teaching and writing on historical performance practice reintroduced audiences and musicians to what Baroque keyboard music actually sounded like on the instruments it was written for. She became a naturalized French citizen in 1938.
