A Soviet-born stand-up comedian who arrived in the United States in 1977 speaking no English and built a career mining the gap between Soviet and American life for laughs, appearing alongside Robin Williams in Moscow on the Hudson and Tom Hanks in The Money Pit. His catchphrase, "What a country!", became a genuine piece of 1980s American pop culture, and he still performs at the theater he opened in Branson, Missouri, in 1993.
