Yehuda Amichai

Israeli poet

1924 – 2000aged 76

Yehuda Amichai helped remake Hebrew poetry by writing in the language people actually spoke, rather than the formal register poets had used before him, producing seventeen books eventually translated into more than twenty languages. He changed his name from Ludwig Pfeuffer to Amichai — 'my nation lives' — and was repeatedly nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, winning Israel's Bialik and Israel Prizes along the way.
