Yitzhak Navon served as president of Israel from 1978 to 1983, the first president born in Jerusalem and the first Sephardi Jew to hold the office. Before politics he worked as a diplomat and wrote plays and books drawing on Sephardi and Ladino culture, work that helped bring that heritage into Israel's cultural mainstream alongside his years in public office.
