Commanded the forces that took Jerusalem in 1967 and, thirty years later, shook Yasser Arafat's hand on the White House lawn with visible reluctance and complete deliberateness. As prime minister he signed the Oslo Accords and made peace with Jordan, sharing the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. An Israeli religious extremist shot him dead at a Tel Aviv peace rally in November 1995. "Enough of blood and tears," he had said at the signing. "Enough."
