Russian Jewish poet, founder of Revisionist Zionist movem

1880 – 1940aged 59

A Zionist leader, orator, and writer who founded the Revisionist Zionist movement, arguing for an assertive push toward a Jewish state with a defensible border on both banks of the Jordan River, in contrast to the gradualist approach of mainstream Labor Zionism. With Joseph Trumpeldor he co-founded the Jewish Legion within the British Army during the First World War, and the youth movement he founded, Betar, along with the paramilitary Irgun that grew from his ideas, shaped a rival current of Zionist politics that outlasted him.
