Zero Mostel

American actor

1915 – 1977aged 62

A booming, physically explosive comic actor who originated Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof and Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and won three Tony Awards doing it. He was blacklisted in the 1950s after refusing to name names before the House Un-American Activities Committee, a period he later dramatized in The Front (1976) alongside Woody Allen. He returned most memorably to film as the desperate producer Max Bialystock in Mel Brooks's The Producers (1967).
