Abraham Maimonides
Egyptian rabbi
c. 1186 – 1237aged 51
The son of Maimonides, he became nagid — leader — of Egyptian Jewry at just eighteen, a position his family would hold for four generations. Where his father's Guide for the Perplexed defended reason within Judaism, Abraham's own Comprehensive Guide for the Servants of God ran three times its length, and drew openly on Sufi mysticism to found a pietistic movement blending Jewish and Islamic devotional practice that outlasted him by more than a century. He also served as court physician while defending his father's philosophy against critics who had burned his books in Montpellier.
