Abraham Maslow
American psychologist
1909 – 1970aged 61
He proposed that human motivation follows a hierarchy, from basic survival needs up to what he called self-actualization, reframing psychology's traditional focus on pathology into an argument for studying psychological health directly rather than only diagnosing its absence. A 2002 survey ranked him the tenth most cited psychologist of the twentieth century, and his hierarchy of needs remains widely taught well beyond psychology, from management theory to education.
