Alan J. Heeger

American chemist, physicist

b. 1936age 90Living

A physicist and chemist who helped found an entire field: conducting polymers, plastics that carry electric current the way metals do. The discovery upended the assumption that plastic was necessarily an insulator and opened the way to flexible electronics, organic LEDs and solar cells. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2002 for that pioneering work and for helping bring conducting polymers into practical technology.
