Alexander Friedmann
Russian mathematician
1888 – 1925aged 37
A Russian mathematician and physicist who, working from Einstein's own equations, derived in 1922 that the universe should be expanding rather than static — a result Einstein initially dismissed as a calculation error before conceding it was correct. The Friedmann equations he developed became the mathematical foundation of modern cosmology, underpinning the later discovery of the Big Bang.
