Arieh Warshel helped invent a way to simulate chemistry at scales too large for pure quantum mechanics and too complex for classical physics alone, developing multiscale computer models that let researchers watch how enzymes and other large biological molecules actually function, atom by atom. He shared the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Michael Levitt and Martin Karplus for the work, developed over a career split between Israel and the University of Southern California, where he holds the Dana and David Dornsife Chair in Chemistry.
