Aryeh Kaplan

American rabbi and physicist

1934 – 1983aged 48

An Orthodox rabbi and former physicist who turned to translating and explaining Judaism for English-speaking readers, most notably in his widely used Living Torah edition. His prolific output of pamphlets on Jewish belief and philosophy, much of it written for the youth group NCSY, is credited as a major force behind the baal teshuva movement of secular Jews returning to observance. He also wrote extensively on Kabbalah, making esoteric material newly accessible to a general audience before his death at 48.
