Burton Richter

American physicist

1931 – 2018aged 87

Led the Stanford team that co-discovered the J/ψ meson in 1974, a new subatomic particle found independently and almost simultaneously by a Brookhaven team led by Samuel Ting — a coincidence dramatic enough that physicists called it the November Revolution. Richter and Ting shared the 1976 Nobel Prize in Physics for it, and Richter went on to direct SLAC for fifteen years.
