Carol Gilligan

American feminist, ethicist, and psychologist

b. 1936age 89Living

A psychologist whose 1982 book In a Different Voice challenged the dominant model of moral development, arguing that Lawrence Kohlberg's stage theory had been built on studies of boys and mistook a female emphasis on relationships and care for a deficiency rather than a different, equally valid ethical framework. The book helped found the "ethics of care" as a distinct approach in moral philosophy and reshaped feminist psychology; Time named her among America's 25 most influential people in 1996.
