David Bohm
American theoretical physicist
1917 – 1992aged 74
Bohm developed the causal, deterministic interpretation of quantum mechanics known as de Broglie–Bohm theory, arguing against the field's dominant view that reality has no definite structure beneath measurement. He extended this into a broader philosophy of an "implicate order" underlying physical reality, and wrote influentially about the limits of fragmented, purely technical reasoning. A student of J. Robert Oppenheimer at Berkeley, Bohm was suspended from Princeton and later left the United States after being investigated for Communist affiliations during the McCarthy era.
