Dennis Gabor
Nobel Prize-winning physicist and inventor of holography
1900 – 1979aged 78
Invented holography — a way of recording and reconstructing a three-dimensional image using the interference pattern of light waves — years before the laser existed to make it practical. The Hungarian-British physicist worked out the theory in 1947 and had to wait until the 1960s to see it realized, winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971 for an idea the technology of his own era couldn't yet catch up to.
