Douglas Osheroff

American physicist

b. 1945age 81Living

Douglas Osheroff shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physics for co-discovering superfluidity in helium-3, a state in which the liquid flows with zero viscosity — a phenomenon first spotted, by his own account, as an odd anomaly in a graduate-student experiment that turned out to be real physics rather than equipment error. He spent much of his career at Stanford as a professor of physics.
