Felix Bloch
Swiss physicist
1905 – 1983aged 77
Worked out, alongside Edward Purcell but independently, a new method for precisely measuring the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei — nuclear magnetic resonance — that earned the two of them the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physics and became, decades later, the physical basis of MRI scanning. He was Stanford's first Nobel laureate and also made early theoretical contributions to understanding ferromagnetism and how electrons behave inside crystal lattices.
