Ferdinand Cohn

German biologist

1828 – 1898aged 70

A German biologist counted among the founders of modern bacteriology and microbiology. Working at the University of Breslau, Cohn was among the first to classify bacteria systematically and study them as living organisms rather than curiosities, laying groundwork that later researchers built on directly. He also mentored Robert Koch early in his career, giving Koch's foundational work on anthrax its first serious hearing.
