George Lusztig

American mathematician and Abdun Nur Professor at the Mas

b. 1946age 80Living

A mathematician whose work reshaped representation theory: Deligne–Lusztig varieties, developed with Pierre Deligne, gave a new way to construct representations of finite groups of Lie type, and Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials, along with his theory of character sheaves, became standard tools across the field. Born in Romania, he has spent most of his career at MIT. His contributions were recognized with the Cole Prize (1985), the Shaw Prize (2014), and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics (2022).
