Gilbert Stork

Belgian American chemist

1921 – 2017aged 95

Gilbert Stork spent a quarter-century as a Columbia University chemistry professor devising some of organic chemistry's most enduring techniques, including the Stork enamine alkylation, a method still taught to every student of the field. He pursued a lifelong project to synthesize quinine and pioneered the first deliberately stereocontrolled total synthesis of a natural product, while training generations of chemists who went on to make their own mark on the discipline.
