Heinz Kohut
Austrian-American psychoanalyst and psychiatrist
1913 – 1981aged 68
Heinz Kohut broke with orthodox Freudian theory to found self psychology, arguing that a therapist's empathy and attunement to a patient's sense of self mattered more than classical drive theory allowed. Trained in Vienna before emigrating to the United States, his ideas reshaped how psychoanalysts understood narcissism and transformed the modern practice of psychodynamic treatment.
