Ilya Prigogine
Russian-Belgian physical chemist
1917 – 2003aged 86
A Belgian chemist of Russian birth who worked out how order can emerge from chaos in systems far from equilibrium — his theory of dissipative structures explained how, say, a chemical reaction can spontaneously organize itself into stable patterns rather than dissolving into randomness. The work, which reached into biology and complex systems more broadly, won him the 1977 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
