Isaac Asimov

1920 – 1992aged 72

Wrote or edited around five hundred books and taught two generations to think about machine intelligence in terms of rules and their failure modes — the Three Laws of Robotics were a literary device that became a genuine reference point in AI ethics. The Foundation series imagined history as a predictive science. A biochemistry professor by day, born near Smolensk and raised over his parents' Brooklyn candy store, he was also one of the great popular explainers of science in English.
