J. Michael Kosterlitz shared the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics with David Thouless and Duncan Haldane for explaining a strange class of phase transitions in condensed matter that conventional theory couldn't account for, work that opened the door to understanding exotic states of matter. He carried out this research decades before the prize, later continuing it as a physics professor at Brown University.
