Jack Steinberger
German-American physicist, Nobel laureate
1921 – 2020aged 99
Jack Steinberger, born Hans Jakob Steinberger in Germany, became one of the twentieth century's leading experimental particle physicists in the United States. Working with Leon Lederman and Melvin Schwartz, he discovered the muon neutrino — establishing that the ghostly, nearly massless particle comes in more than one type — and the three shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics for it. He held posts at Berkeley and Columbia before spending nearly two decades at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory.
